What is the NZeTA?
The NZeTA is the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority. It is an online travel authority issued by Immigration New Zealand.
It is used by eligible travelers before traveling to New Zealand, including many visa waiver visitors, transit passengers and cruise ship passengers.
The NZeTA is not the same as the New Zealand Traveller Declaration. The NZeTA is a travel authority, while the Traveller Declaration is an arrival declaration.
What is the official NZeTA website?
The official NZeTA website is nzeta.immigration.govt.nz.
Travelers should use the official Immigration New Zealand website or the official NZeTA mobile app when submitting passport, travel and payment information.
Be careful with unofficial websites that imitate the government service, charge extra fees or promise faster approval.
Who needs an NZeTA?
You may need an NZeTA if you are traveling to New Zealand on a visa waiver passport, transiting through Auckland International Airport, or arriving as a cruise ship passenger.
Eligibility depends on nationality, passport type, travel purpose and route.
Some travelers need a visa instead of an NZeTA. Always check the official Immigration New Zealand website before departure.
NZeTA for visa waiver travelers
Many travelers from visa waiver countries must request an NZeTA before traveling to New Zealand for a short visit.
The NZeTA does not give unlimited permission to stay. Your permitted stay depends on New Zealand immigration rules, your nationality and the decision made at the border.
If you are not from a visa waiver country, you may need to apply for a visitor visa instead.
NZeTA for transit passengers
Some transit passengers need an NZeTA when transiting through Auckland International Airport on their way to another country.
Transit rules depend on nationality, passport, route and whether you stay in the airport transit area.
If you plan to leave the airport or enter New Zealand, your requirements may be different.
NZeTA for cruise ship passengers
Cruise ship passengers may need an NZeTA before traveling to New Zealand, even when they would not normally need a visitor visa for a short stay.
Your cruise route, nationality and passport type can affect the requirement.
Check the official Immigration New Zealand website before boarding your cruise.
NZeTA validity
An NZeTA is valid for multiple trips while it remains valid.
Immigration New Zealand states that an NZeTA is valid for 2 years for travelers and 5 years for crew members.
If your passport expires or changes, you should not assume that an existing NZeTA remains valid for the new passport.
NZeTA fee and IVL
The official NZeTA service lists different request costs depending on how you apply. The NZeTA request costs NZD $17 on the official app or NZD $23 if completed online.
Many visitors must also pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, known as the IVL, when requesting an NZeTA.
The IVL is separate from the NZeTA request fee. Some travelers may be exempt from the IVL depending on their status and route.
When should you request an NZeTA?
Immigration New Zealand recommends allowing up to 72 hours for an NZeTA request to be processed.
Many requests are processed faster, but you should not wait until airport check-in.
Apply when your passport details, travel plan and payment method are ready.
Information required for an NZeTA request
To request an NZeTA, prepare your passport details, nationality, date of birth, travel information, contact details and payment method.
You may also need to answer eligibility and character-related questions shown by the official system.
Use the same passport that you will use for airline check-in, cruise boarding and New Zealand border control.
Step-by-step NZeTA request process
First, go to the official NZeTA website or use the official NZeTA mobile app.
Then complete the request with your personal, passport and travel information. Review every field carefully before payment, especially passport number, name spelling, nationality and date of birth.
After submission, check the result through the official service and keep the approval information available when traveling.
Can you correct an NZeTA request?
If you make a mistake in your NZeTA request, check the official Immigration New Zealand service for the current correction or re-application process.
Common mistakes include wrong passport number, wrong name spelling, incorrect date of birth, wrong nationality or using a passport that will not be used for travel.
If your passport details change, you may need to request a new NZeTA.
NZeTA and New Zealand Traveller Declaration
The NZeTA and the New Zealand Traveller Declaration are separate travel procedures.
The NZeTA is a travel authority for eligible travelers. The New Zealand Traveller Declaration is an arrival declaration used for border, customs and biosecurity information.
If you need an NZeTA, completing the Traveller Declaration does not replace it. If you already have an NZeTA, you still need to check the Traveller Declaration requirement before arrival.
NZeTA scam warnings
The official NZeTA website is nzeta.immigration.govt.nz.
Be careful with unofficial websites that use similar names, charge unnecessary service fees or collect sensitive passport and payment information.
Before submitting passport details or payment data, always check that you are using the official Immigration New Zealand service.
